Tree Studios - Chicago

Lambert Tree Studios. Intended as a home for artists and cultural life at the turn of the century, philanthropists Judge and Mrs. Lambert Tree had this studio building constructed with the finest craftsmanship and details of the period. The retail storefronts provided rental income that subsidized the rents for the artists studios. The building's large windows, picturesque details, and distinctive interior courtyard instantly made it a unique cultural oasis, home to many significant artists, including: sculptors Albin Polasek and John Storrs, illustrator J. Allen St. John, muralist John Warner Norton, and painters Ruth Van Sickle Ford, James Murray Haddow, and Pauline Palmer. The nation's oldest-known artist studios, it is one of the most distinctive features of the River North neighborhood. Later annexes to the building, which reflect Arts & Crafts-style designs, are not part of the landmark designation.
