Dam & Royal Palace - Amsterdam

The Royal Palace & Dam Square. Today's royal palace was built in the 17th-century as Amsterdam's Town Hall. The long wars with Spain had ended in 1648 and last Amsterdam could concentrate on beautifying the city. Its Town Hall was to be an eighth wonder of the world. The most famous architects, painters and sculptors of the day combined on this imposing project: Jacob van Campen, Artus Quellinus, Govaert Flinck, Ferdinand Bol. The city was at the height of its glory as a world trading power, and this is reflected in its public buildings. Later, when Louis Napoleon became king of Holland in 1808, he chose Amsterdam as his home and the Town Hall became a Royal Palace.
