Mea Shearim - Jerusalem

This ultra-orthodox Jewish district is a rare example of Jewish quarters (ghetto) which existed before the Holocaust in eastern European communities. It is just to the north of the downtown area and was established in 1875. Mea She'arim in Hebrew is "a hundredfold", and is taken from genesis 26:12, referring to Isaac farming the land and being blessed a hundredfold. Walking these streets is usually an eye-opener: the residents mostly dress in 18th-century east European styles. They are mainly devoted to religious study and are often financed by fellow ultra-orthodox communities abroad.
