(In Swedish Esbo) Population 200 000. Town charter in 1972. According to prehistoric finds, the area was settled as early as 3500 B.C. Espoo's greystone church was completed in the early 15th century, and in 1458 Espoo became an independent parish. Espoo has five regional centres. The best-known of them is Tapiola Garden City, a pioneer work of Finnish town planning.
