A-Ma SquareIn a colourful Taoist ceremony attended by Portuguese and Chinese officials and devotees from various parts of Asia, a 19,99-metre-high marble monument to the goddess A-Ma has been inaugurated on Coloane Island. Visible from far out in the South China Sea, the statue crowns the 170-metre-high Coloane Peak. It cost 8.7 million patacas and was designed by Leong Man Lin. The statue was carved by more than 100 sculptors in Hebei Province and transported in 140 blocks to Macau. A-Ma is highly venerated by local fishermen and has special significance in Macau.
